PABLO PICASSO
|
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
Picasso, who had a profound influence on artistic development in Spain, is
considered to be one of the greatest painters of the twentieth century. Born
in Malaga in southern Spain, Picasso entered the Academy of Fine Arts in
Barcelona when he was just 14 years old. |

During the Spanish Civil War
(1936-39) the world was shocked by the bombing of the civilian town of
Guernica by Nazi planes acting under General Franco’s orders. This inspired
Picasso’s famous anti-war painting entitled Guernica. Death became a
favourite topic in his works after that. He met the French painter,
Francoise Gilot in this period, with whom he had two children. |

Vincent began 1890 with a period
of recovery and of incident. At the end of January he received the news
which moved him deeply, of the birth of Theo's son ,whom the
parents named after him. He had also just heard of the publication of the
first substantial assessment of his work-an extravagant hymn of praise by
the parisian critic, Albert
Aurier, but in march he suffered his worst ever crisis, which prostrated him
for nearly 2 months

Vincent acquired this
stuffed kingfisher (above) in Paris and painted it as if alive in a natural
setting. From another artist this might have been an embarrassing
work, but Vincent could convey a sense of life in painting, even when
working as carelessly as this. It shows a touching nostalgia for his
youthful interest in the countryside. |
