Mary Kingsley visited the
Fang tribe, they were cannibals and fierce.
She was the first European to go to the remote parts of Gabon.
She was taught to read at home, but she was never given a formal education.
She became famous when she returned from her adventures and gave
lectures on life in Africa.
She paid for her African trip by trading British cloth for ivory and rubber
which she sold back home.
She climbed the South east face of Mount Cameroon the tallest mountain in
west Africa ( 14,435FT.)
Mary Kingsley went to West Africa to study religion.
She died of typhoid fever when she was 38 years old.
